About

Almost three kilometres long, this avenue carried the sacred barques of the gods between the two great temples during festivals. Hundreds of sphinxes, many with human heads and others with the heads of rams, once flanked it. Long buried beneath the modern town, it was excavated over decades and reopened with a grand ceremony in 2021.

Best time to go: Walk a stretch from Luxor Temple in the early evening, when the heat eases and the sphinxes are lit.
