About

Opened at the start of the twentieth century and designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, the lift carries passengers up its ornate iron tower in wood-panelled cabins. The viewing deck at the summit overlooks the Baixa grid, the castle hill and the river, and a walkway connects to the ruins of the Carmo Convent.

Best time to go: Queues are long for the lift itself; you can reach the top platform on foot from the Carmo side.
