About

Rebuilt on a grand scale after the 1755 earthquake destroyed the royal palace that stood here, the square is framed on three sides by yellow arcades and opens on the fourth to the Tagus. An equestrian statue of King José I stands at its centre, and the Rua Augusta Arch leads into the orderly grid of the Baixa.

Best time to go: Walk through the triumphal arch from Rua Augusta and finish at the river steps at sunset.
