About
Built in the 1940s in the Habous, a new medina laid out by French planners in traditional style, the Mahkama served as the pasha's court and residence. Its dozens of rooms are richly decorated with carved cedar ceilings, stucco and zellige by master craftsmen. The surrounding lanes are known for their olive sellers, bookshops and patisseries.
Best time to go: Visit as part of a morning in the Habous quarter, browsing its bookshops and pastry sellers.
