About
Founded by the Fatimids in 970, soon after they established Cairo, Al-Azhar became a university that still draws students from across the Muslim world. Rulers of every later period added to it, so the white marble courtyard is framed by minarets and gates of different eras. It remains a working mosque, calm and welcoming amid the bustle of the old city.
Best time to go: Dress modestly, leave your shoes at the entrance and visit outside the times of Friday prayers.
