About
Saladin began the Citadel in the 1170s, and it remained the seat of Egypt's rulers for some seven centuries. Its skyline is dominated by the Muhammad Ali Mosque, built in the Ottoman style in the nineteenth century and faced with alabaster. The walls also enclose older Mamluk mosques and several museums, while the terraces give sweeping views across Cairo.
Best time to go: Visit in the late afternoon and finish on the terrace beside the mosque, looking out over the city.
