Built in 1899 to house European travellers arriving by Nile steamer, the Old Cataract has hosted royalty, statesmen and writers. Agatha Christie stayed here, and the hotel features in the world of Death on the Nile. Its Moorish-style interiors and terrace overlooking Elephantine Island and the river remain wonderfully atmospheric.
