European settlement in Australia began here in 1788, and the area grew into a rough maritime quarter of warehouses, taverns and cottages. Saved from demolition in the 1970s by community campaigns, it now combines restored buildings, small museums and galleries, and a weekend market, with the Harbour Bridge rising overhead.
