About
Once an imperial hunting ground, the Prater was opened to the public by Joseph II in 1766. Its amusement park, the Wurstelprater, is dominated by the Riesenrad, built in 1897 and made famous by the film The Third Man, while the rest of the park offers long avenues and riverside woodland.
Best time to go: Ride the Giant Ferris Wheel towards sunset, then walk or cycle down the chestnut-lined Hauptallee.
