About
Trujillo was founded in 1534 and laid out around this square, whose buildings are painted in vivid blues, yellows and pinks. At its centre stands the Freedom Monument, a large sculpture celebrating Peruvian independence, which Trujillo proclaimed in 1820 ahead of Lima.
Best time to go: Stroll around it in the evening, when the pastel facades are lit and the plaza fills with families.
