About
In the Viking Age the island was a place of execution, and Benedictine monks founded one of Norway's first monasteries here around 1100. It was later rebuilt as a fortress and prison, and during the Second World War anti-aircraft guns were installed. Today it is a popular summer destination with guided tours of the fort, swimming spots and a café.
Best time to go: Take the summer boat from the Ravnkloa fish market and bring a swimsuit for the small beaches.
