About
Founded in 796 by Harthama ibn A'yan, the Abbasid governor of Ifriqiya, this is the oldest ribat built during the Arab conquest of the Maghreb. It was enlarged in 966 and altered many times, growing into a group of buildings around two courtyards. A spiral staircase of about a hundred steps leads up the watchtower, which visitors can climb for views over Monastir and its beach.
Best time to go: Make the short trip to Monastir in the morning, climb the tower first, then walk on to the Bourguiba mausoleum.
