About
The Great Mosque of Monastir stands on the edge of the old town overlooking the sea, close to the ribat. Its prayer hall was first built in the ninth century, with vaulted bays on cross-shaped pillars, then enlarged in the eleventh century, when work on the mihrab began. The mihrab is decorated with Zirid-style motifs, Kufic inscriptions and floral mouldings, and tall stone facades frame its doors and windows.
Best time to go: See it on the same walk as the ribat; dress modestly if you step inside outside prayer times.
