The zigzags were built in the 1920s to make a very steep hill manageable for cars. Hydrangeas and neat gardens line the curves, and the view from the top looks towards Coit Tower and the bay. Steps run down both sides for those on foot.
Best time to go: Walk down the brick-paved bends early in the day, then continue to the North Beach cafés.
