About
Built in 1933 with money left by the philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit, the tower rises over North Beach. Its ground-floor walls are covered in murals painted by local artists under a New Deal programme, depicting California life in the 1930s. A lift carries visitors to an observation deck with views of the bay and bridges.
Best time to go: Climb up via the Filbert Street Steps, lined with gardens, then admire the murals in the lobby.
