About
Protected by the curve of the bay, Porto da Barra has gentle waves ideal for swimming and is said to be where the Portuguese first came ashore to found the city. Flanked by two small forts, it has a strong local following, with vendors, music and a festive crowd that gathers as the sun goes down.
Best time to go: Swim in the calm water in the morning, then stay for the lively late-afternoon beach scene.
