About
The first fortification here dates from the sixteenth century, making it one of the oldest in Brazil, and the lighthouse on its ramparts has guided ships into the bay for centuries. Inside, a nautical museum tells the story of Salvador's seafaring past, and the lawns around it are a favourite gathering place at sunset.
Best time to go: Arrive about an hour before sunset and watch the sun sink into the bay from the fortress walls.
