About
King Manuel I founded the monastery around 1501 near the spot where Vasco da Gama set sail for India, and the explorer's tomb now lies inside the church. The two-storey cloister, laced with carved foliage, knots and maritime motifs, is one of the finest pieces of architecture in Portugal.
Best time to go: The church is free to enter; book cloister tickets ahead and arrive at opening.
