About
Built in the early sixteenth century to guard the river approach to Lisbon, the tower is a showpiece of the ornate Manueline style, with rope mouldings, armillary spheres and a small rhinoceros carved into its stone. Inside, narrow stairs climb past the old gun deck and royal rooms to a terrace looking out over the estuary.
Best time to go: Come early or late in the day and walk the waterfront from the Monument of the Discoveries.
