About
Nelson Mandela moved into this small brick house in Orlando West in the 1940s and returned to it briefly after his release in 1990. It is now a museum with family photographs, personal belongings and bullet marks on the walls. Vilakazi Street outside is famed as the only street in the world to have been home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
Best time to go: Combine it with the Hector Pieterson Museum on a guided day in Soweto, and eat on Vilakazi Street.
