About
On 16 June 1976, thousands of schoolchildren marched in Soweto against the imposition of Afrikaans in their schools, and police opened fire. The museum is named after twelve-year-old Hector Pieterson, whose death was captured in a photograph that shocked the world. Exhibits and eyewitness accounts retrace the day and its role in the fight against apartheid.
Best time to go: Visit before Mandela House, a short walk away, and pause at the memorial outside.
