About
Completed in the early 1970s, the fifty-storey Carlton Centre was for decades the tallest building on the continent and a symbol of Johannesburg's mining wealth. When its top-floor viewing level, known as the Top of Africa, is open, it gives a sweeping view over the grid of towers, the old mine dumps to the south and the leafy northern suburbs.
Best time to go: Check whether the Top of Africa deck is open before you go, and explore the area with a local guide.
