About
Completed in 1897 after the old town hall was lost in the Great Fire of 1842, the Rathaus expresses the pride of a wealthy trading city. Its sandstone facade carries statues of emperors, and a tall clock tower rises above the square. Inside are hundreds of rooms, including sumptuous halls used by the Senate and the city parliament.
Best time to go: Join a guided tour of the state rooms, then relax in the arcades by the Alster canal.
