About

Completed in 1648 when Shah Jahan moved his capital from Agra, the fort enclosed the palaces, audience halls and gardens of the Mughal court behind walls more than two kilometres long. Inside, look for the marble Diwan-i-Khas, where the Peacock Throne once stood, and the columned Diwan-i-Aam, where the emperor heard petitions from his subjects.

Best time to go: Go early in the morning, enter through the Lahori Gate and leave time for the quieter pavilions at the back.
