About
The Dutch East India Company built the castle between 1666 and 1679 to protect its supply station on the route to the East. Its five bastions, moat and yellow-painted walls enclose military museums, the old governor's residence and a collection of Cape furniture and art. It remains the seat of the army in the Western Cape.
Best time to go: Arrive in the morning to catch the key ceremony and take a guided tour of the bastions.
