About
The Bo-Kaap grew in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as home to many of the city's Muslim community, descended from people enslaved and exiled from South East Asia. Its streets of colourful terraced houses climb Signal Hill, and it is home to the Auwal Mosque, the oldest in South Africa. The Bo-Kaap Museum tells the story of Cape Malay culture.
Best time to go: Walk up in the morning light and join a local cooking class to taste Cape Malay dishes.
