About
Most Egyptologists attribute the Sphinx to the reign of Khafre, whose pyramid rises behind it. Carved from a single ridge of limestone, it is over 70 metres long and one of the largest monolithic statues in the world. Between its paws stands the Dream Stele of Thutmose IV, who, according to its text, cleared the sand that had buried the figure.
Best time to go: Approach through Khafre's valley temple, and come back in the late afternoon for softer light on its face.
