About
Wealthy families abandoned San Telmo after a yellow fever epidemic in 1871, and their mansions became crowded tenements for new immigrants. Its old streets now hold antique dealers, bars and milongas, while the covered San Telmo Market and the Sunday fair around Plaza Dorrego draw crowds from across the city.
Best time to go: Come on a Sunday for the antiques fair on Plaza Dorrego and the long street market along Defensa.
