About
Bernauer Strasse became notorious when the Wall cut along its houses in 1961, and residents escaped from their windows. The memorial keeps a section of the border installations as they were, including the inner wall, death strip and a watchtower. Markers trace lost buildings and escape tunnels, and a chapel stands where a church was demolished in 1985.
Best time to go: Start at the visitor centre and climb the documentation centre's tower to look down on the border strip.
