About

Built in the reign of Augustus and dedicated to the Nubian sun god Mandulis, Kalabsha is one of the largest freestanding temples of Nubia. In the 1960s it was taken apart and rebuilt near the High Dam, together with smaller monuments such as the Kiosk of Qertassi and the rock temple of Beit el-Wali, whose reliefs still hold traces of colour.

Best time to go: Take a boat from near the High Dam in the morning; the site is rarely crowded.
