About
Completed in 1970 with Soviet support, the High Dam ended the annual Nile flood, generating electricity and allowing year-round irrigation. It also created Lake Nasser, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, which forced the relocation of Nubian communities and of monuments such as Abu Simbel. A lotus-shaped monument commemorates its construction.
Best time to go: Stop on the way to Philae or Kalabsha, and look out over Lake Nasser on one side and the Nile on the other.
