About

Sultan Qaitbay built this fortress in the 1470s to guard the harbour, reusing stone from the ruins of the Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, which had been toppled by earthquakes. Its thick walls, mosque and passages can be explored, and the ramparts look back along the curve of the Eastern Harbour to the city.

Best time to go: Walk along the Corniche to reach it in the late afternoon and watch the sun set over the harbour.
