Founded in 1843, the zoo has kept its nineteenth-century character with elegant buildings such as the Egyptian Temple and a classical giraffe house set among old trees. Today it houses animals from around the world, an aquarium and a nocturnal house, and its gardens provide a green refuge in the heart of the city.
