The Imperial City, also called Đại Nội, is the royal enclosure inside the walled citadel of Huế, capital of the Nguyễn dynasty. Work began in 1804 under Emperor Gia Long, and it was enlarged to its present scale in 1833. It held palaces, shrines, gardens and offices for mandarins. After the end of the monarchy in 1945 it suffered heavy damage in the Indochina wars, and restoration continues across the site.
