À propos
Completed in 879 for Ahmad ibn Tulun, governor of Egypt, the mosque is built of brick and plaster around one of the largest courtyards in the Islamic world. Arcades carved with delicate stucco surround it, and the unusual minaret, with an external staircase, recalls the great mosque of Samarra in Iraq. Its serenity makes a striking contrast with the streets outside.
Meilleur moment pour y aller: Climb the spiral minaret for the view, then visit the Gayer-Anderson Museum next door.
