Completed in the mid-fourteenth century, the tower was built to rise as high as the cathedral, a statement of civic pride. It takes its name from its first bell-ringer, remembered for spending his wages freely. Around four hundred steps lead to the top, where the Campo lies far below and the countryside rolls away on every side.
Mejor momento para ir: Climb early, as entry is timed and numbers are limited; the steps are steep and narrow.
