The Campo slopes gently down towards the Palazzo Pubblico, its brick paving divided into nine sections in honour of the Council of Nine that governed medieval Siena. It has been the heart of civic life for more than seven centuries. Twice each summer the square is packed for the Palio, a bareback horse race between the city's districts.
