Once a fishing village and later a fashionable resort for Porto's merchant families, Foz do Douro spreads along the river mouth and the ocean shore at the western edge of the city. A long promenade leads past rocky beaches, cafés and the old fort of São João Baptista to the Felgueiras lighthouse, where waves break against the pier in winter storms.
Beste Besuchszeit: Take the historic tram along the river from the Ribeira and stay for sunset over the Atlantic.
