In Inca times this was Huacaypata, the vast central square of the imperial capital, where the great ceremonies of the empire were held. The Spanish built the cathedral and the Jesuit church over Inca palaces on its edges, and today its arcades, balconies and fountain form the centre of a UNESCO World Heritage city.
Beste Besuchszeit: Sit on the cathedral steps in the early evening, as the light softens and the plaza fills with local life.
