Opened in 1902 in its salmon-pink building, this was for more than a century the world's greatest store of Egyptian antiquities. Many headline pieces have moved to newer museums, but its dim galleries still hold extraordinary works, including the Narmer Palette, fine Old Kingdom statuary and the rich burial goods of Yuya and Tjuyu. Its old-fashioned atmosphere is part of its charm.
Beste Besuchszeit: Go in the morning, and hire a guide or use a good guidebook, as labelling is sparse.
