After his wife Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631, Shah Jahan commissioned a tomb on the bank of the Yamuna that took around two decades to complete. Its symmetry, calligraphy and inlaid semi-precious stones reward close inspection, and the approach through the great gateway into the long garden, with the dome framed ahead, is one of travel's great moments.
Beste Besuchszeit: Be at the gates for sunrise, when the marble turns from grey to pink to white and the crowds are lightest.
