About

Founded as a tobacco port in the eighteenth century, Georgetown was a separate town before becoming part of Washington. Its leafy streets are lined with Federal-style houses, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs through its southern edge. The waterfront park, the university and the lively shopping streets make it an enjoyable place to wander.

Best time to go: Walk the towpath along the C&O Canal, then browse the shops and cafés on M Street and Wisconsin Avenue.
