About

Remodelled for Maria Theresa in the mid-eighteenth century, Schönbrunn was the summer home of the imperial family and the birthplace and deathbed of Franz Joseph. Tours pass through gilded state rooms and private apartments, while the park holds the Gloriette colonnade, a palm house and the world's oldest surviving zoo.

Best time to go: Book a timed palace ticket for the morning, then climb through the gardens to the Gloriette.
