About
Gamla Uppsala was a centre of royal power and pagan worship in the centuries before Christianity reached Sweden. Three great burial mounds from the sixth century rise beside a medieval stone church, and a small museum explains the archaeology and the sagas linked to the site.
Best time to go: Cycle out on a fine day, walk the mounds, then visit the museum to understand what you have seen.
