About
Founded, according to legend, by the Phoenician queen Dido, Carthage grew from a colony of Tyre into the capital of a Punic empire that dominated much of the western Mediterranean in the first millennium BC. It rose again as Roman Carthage, one of the richest cities of the classical world. Its scattered remains, including Byrsa hill and the Baths of Antoninus, now lie within a quiet suburb east of the Lake of Tunis.
Best time to go: Take the TGM light railway from Tunis and hop between the sites; start on Byrsa hill for the overview.
