About
Chan Chan flourished from around the ninth century until the Incas conquered the Chimú in the fifteenth century. Its walled palace compounds, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are decorated with friezes of fish, birds and waves, and the Tschudi complex gives the clearest idea of the city's plazas, audience halls and reservoirs.
Best time to go: Go in the morning with a guide, starting at the restored Tschudi palace, and bring sun protection.
