About
Completed in 1898 as a market hall, the Romanesque Revival building fell into decline in the twentieth century and was threatened with demolition before a careful restoration in the 1980s. Today its tiled floors, cast-iron balustrades and central dome house shops and cafés, and its mechanical clocks put on small displays of royal and Australian history.
Best time to go: Head to the upper galleries to see the stained-glass windows and the great hanging clocks.
