About

Jeongjo raised the fortress between 1794 and 1796 to honour his father, Crown Prince Sado, using new techniques and devices such as cranes and pulleys. Almost six kilometres of walls link the great gates of Paldalmun and Janganmun, watchtowers, command posts, the arched Hwahongmun sluice gate and the graceful Banghwasuryujeong pavilion.

Best time to go: Walk the whole wall circuit clockwise from Paldalmun in the late afternoon, ending at Banghwasuryujeong.
