About

Built in the late seventeenth century for Queen Hedvig Eleonora, Drottningholm was inspired by Versailles and has been the private residence of the royal family since 1981. Its formal gardens, Chinese Pavilion and eighteenth-century court theatre, still using its original stage machinery, are all open to visitors.

Best time to go: Travel by boat along Lake Mälaren in summer, and book a tour of the palace theatre.
