About
Salona grew into one of the largest cities of the eastern Adriatic and was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, close to where Diocletian was born. After it was sacked in the early seventh century, its people sheltered inside the emperor's palace by the sea. Today the remains of its walls, basilicas, early Christian cemeteries and amphitheatre spread across the fields of modern Solin.
Best time to go: Go early on a summer morning, as there is little shade among the ruins, and wear sturdy shoes.
